Baraboo, WI – Robert Lawrence “Bob” Roth, age 89, was eclipsed out of our lives on Friday, October 27, 2023, having passed away peacefully, being ever so “Nearer My God to Thee,” resplendent in his contribution toward “Our vines hath tender grapes” (Song of Solomon 2:15). He was born August 22, 1934 to Oscar and Bessie (Hynek) Roth of Hillsboro (Vernon County). Bob attended Hillsboro High School class of 1952, graduated with an FFA certificate, ran track and field, and overcame speech and language difficulties through singing, being a gifted tenor vocalist in SPEBSQSA and Wisconsin State quartets. In 1960, Bob met Berlaine Mohr of Iowa, at the dance hall in Yuba, Wisconsin, and they were united in marriage on June 2, 1962. They had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary traveling to New Orleans by tour bus in 2012. Bob practiced land conservation techniques on the 240-acre dairy farm in Juneau County, having bought the 360 degree-view hilltop farmstead in 1959, and where one of the area’s first pole-sheds was constructed as experiment on-site. After the 1979 tornado that wiped out two outbuildings and the 1980 fire that destroyed the barn, granary, and stockyards, Bob continued to work the land for crop rotation, hay, some experiments with tobacco (briefly, due to moth damage), cords of wood, raising steers and calves to sell. This was all done while working at Wisconsin Dairies milk receiving station in Union Center, and then at Pace Industries of Reedsburg. The 200 acres was parceled out in 2000, including transplantation of the century-old Concord grapevine, and a new pole-shed and Kickapoo Homes house was built on a remnant 40 acres until auction in 2015, when they moved to Baraboo and became members of St. John Lutheran Church. Bob was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hillsboro where he served in various capacities which included usher, choir, church council; the Czesky Den Singers 2007; elected president of the Czech heritage organization 2012; was asked to join the Viroqua Men’s Chorus 2013; and was “on-call” at many local funeral homes or singing engagements, performing over 200 solo tenor musical arrangements. He always said that it was music that saved him from being sad about the grieving inherent of loss, including the loss of his hearing most recently. His God-given voice was unique in that he could project as a solo tenor but could also blend to sing in harmony with other voices of all caliber. In April of 2023, Bob and Berlaine moved to an assisted living facility in Portage. Bob was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, David in 1966; brother, Richard in 1990; and a sister, Mary (née Havlik) in 2022. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Berlaine; daughter, Jaina; son, Rob; and granddaughter, MacKenzie. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 9, 2023 at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, 579 Lake St., Hillsboro, WI, with Pastor Conrad Prell officiating. Visitation will be at the church from 9:30 a.m. until time of service, immediately followed by a luncheon. A private family interment will take place in Mt. Vernon Cemetery in Hillsboro. The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Wisconsin Dells Health Services and Aspirus Divine Savior Hospital in Portage. Baldwin Funeral Services, 520 East St., in Baraboo, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Baraboo, WI. - Violet “Vi” Jean (Hare) Tully was born on February 21, 1931 to Robert and Lillian Hare in Bethnal Green in the east end of London, England. When war was declared on Germany in 1939, young Vi was one of the many children that were evacuated from London to the English countryside. She soon returned to London and survived the Blitz of 1940-1941 and the Bethnal Green Tube Disaster of 1943. After completing her schooling, Vi entered the workforce eventually landing a job as a typist at the Housing Department of the Metropolitan Borough of Bethnal Green, a job she truly loved. Through connections she had made through her local church, Vi came to America in 1956 to work as secretary at Central Congregational Church in Topeka, Kansas. There, she met the associate minister, Bob Tully, and after a short romance the two were married in April of 1957 at Vi’s home church in London’s East End. Bob and Vi soon moved to Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, where Bob would serve as minister of Hope United Church of Christ for an eleven-year pastorate. During their time in Sturgeon Bay, Vi also gave birth to three rambunctious boys. The family then moved on for a 24-year pastorate at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Watertown, Wisconsin. Vi had numerous hobbies during this time, sewing many of her own clothes, knitting, plus macrame, decoupage, and furniture refinishing. She also worked at the Watertown Daily Times for several years and later, taught English as a second language at the Watertown MATC. It was not uncommon to hear some of local Laotian population speaking English with a slight Cockney lilt! Upon Bob’s retirement in 1993, they settled in Baraboo, Wisconsin, and did volunteer work, helping briefly at the International Crane Foundation, Nature Conservancy, and Circus World Museum, before devoting eighteen summers to greeting visitors every Friday at the Nature Center at Devil’s Lake State Park. Bob passed in 2015, and four years later Vi moved into Assisted Living at St. Clare Meadows, where she charmed both staff and fellow residents with her sassy humor and feisty disposition. Vi’s interests included reading, watching reruns of old TV shows, particularly M*A*S*H and the Andy Griffith Show, and cake - Vi loved cake! She also looked forward to her weekly “Movie Night” with Mark and Ralani, and her daily phone calls from Steve and John. Vi died on Saturday, November 4, 2023 at a still-feisty 92 years old. Survivors include sons, Steven (Pat) of Waterloo, Mark (Ralani) of Baraboo, and John (Robin) of Sheboygan; grandchildren, Kyla (Keegan) Tully of Edinburgh, Scotland, and Ian of Milwaukee; step-grandchild, Vanessa Morales of Waterloo; step-great -grandchildren, Devin Guerra, Liliana Morales, Ryder and Isabella Fredrick; niece, Barbara Wolfe; nephew, Thom Wolfe; and other relatives. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 12, 2023 at Baldwin Funeral Services, 520 East St., Baraboo, with Pastor Kay Hallanger officiating. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 1:00 p.m. until time of service. Memorials may be given to Friends of the Carnegie-Schadde Memorial Public Library of Baraboo, 230 Fourth Ave., Baraboo, WI 53913. The family offers many thanks to the nursing staff and residents at St Clare Meadows in Baraboo for offering so much love and enrichment during Vi’s final years.
